Gijón, a summer for climbing Climbing | Presentation of the IFSC Sport Climbing World Championships of Lead, Speed and Paraclimbing Gijón 2014, and the Asturias’ Sport Climbing Championship of Lead and the Promotional Campaign 2014 | The President of the Sports Superior Council, Miguel Cardenal, and the Mayor of Gijón, Carmen Moriyón, signed the Consortium of “Event of Special Interest” for the appointment of September
At the introduction of the act, the President of the Sports Superior Council, Miguel Cardenal, and the Mayor of Gijón, Carmen Moriyón, proceeded to the Signature of the Consortium for the Championships as “Event of Special Interest”.

The act of presentation took place on Wednesday the 25th of June at 13:00 hours at the Town Council of Gijón and involved the assistance of the President of the Sports Superior Council, Miguel Cardenal, the President of the Sports Department of Gijón’s Town Council, Pedro Barbillo, the President of the Spanish Mountain Federation, Joan Garrigós, and the General Sports Director, José Ramón Tuero.

The city of Gijón will host, from the 8th to the 14th of September 2014, the IFSC Sport Climbing World Championships in the modalities of Speed, Lead and Paraclimbing, with an estimated participation of more than 800 climbers from 65 different countries.

Gijón was chosen because we presented a project that was liked by the International Climbing Federation, and also because the city has organized for many years successive Spanish Championships since 2011: in 2011 and 2012 the Venue was the Palacio de Deportes, but in 2013 and this 2014 the Championships were at the Plaza Mayor (Main Square).

The World Championship is more than just one Event

Gijón opens the summer with the Spanish Championship of Lead Sport Climbing 2014 which will take place the Saturday 28th of June at the Plaza Mayor.

After this, it comes the Asturias Championship which will take place the 5th of July, also at the Plaza Mayor, and will be an open competition to federated climbers and amateurs who want to initiate themselves at this sport.

At the same time a promotional campaign is developed with a Drawing Competition in which the participants were students from some schools of Gijón. The prizes were given at the Runners Fair the 3rd of May.

Photography Competition

A photography competition was also called due to the World Championships. Professional and amateur national photographers may be submitted to this contest. The deadline to present the photos will be the 15th of August.

The prizes will be:
• 1st prize: 600 euros, one trophy and one diploma.
• 2nd prize: 450 euros, one trophy and one diploma.
• 3rd prize: 250 euros, one trophy and one diploma.

Street Climbing

In order to promote this sport and also the Championship, several climbing days have been settled in different places of our city, all for free.

Climbing at the Plaza Mayor: 30th of June, 1st , 2nd and 3rd of July.

The following activities will be developed at the climbing wall installed at the Plaza Mayor for the Spanish and Asturias Championships:

Climbing Baptism to children from 9 to 14 years old: from 10.30 to 12.00 - From 12.00 to 13.30 and from 17.00 to 18.30.

Adults also have their own space.

People over 14 years old will be able to climb the climbing wall used for the Spanish Climbing Championship with the assistance of a climbing expert.

4 street climbing days for children: 14th , 23rd , 30th of August and 5th of September.

Places planned for the developement of these activities are: Pericones Square, Poniente, Parchís Square and Begoña’s Park.
Climbing at the Gijón’s Horse Show
An area for climbing games will be daily settled during the CSIO 2014, which will take place at Las Mestas Sports Complex from the 30th of July to the 4th of August, from 16:30 hours to 20:30 hours.

FIDMA (58 Asturias International Sample Trade Fair)

Getting advantage of the Fair as a meeting point of Gijón’s summer and at the same time as the Big Week of the city, two promotional journeys will be organized for publicize the IFSC Sport Climbing Championship 2014.

One Journey at the Town Hall Stand at the other at the Triocar (BMW) Stand

For our city is such an honor to count with an event of this size because the city of Gijón bets for the sports as a key pillar of the development of people and as a promoter of the economic and touristic activity of the city.

Two kind of tickets are available: for a particular day or season tickets for all along the championships.
