This past Saturday we were able to watch, at the Plaza Mayor of Gijón, the precursor of the World Championships, event that will close this climbing summer at Gijón, not without earlier celebrate some climbing journeys and the Asturias Championship.
The rain delayed a couple of hours the start of the competition, but it finally started around 14:30 hours and conditioned the qualifying phase. The participation was high, with 42 climbers: 15 women and 27 men.
The final was among 8 female climbers and 8 male climbers at 19:00 hours.

Ramón Julián and Zuriñe Arrúe won the Spanish Sport Climbing Championship in Lead.
Ramón Julián was the only one of the eight final climbers that reached the ‘top’ of the climbing wall.

After this Spanish Sport Climbing Championship in Lead, the climbing wall installed at the Plaza Mayor will be again the principal stage of some new competitions. Until the 3rd of July, some ‘climbing baptisms’ will be done for young people between 7 and 14 years old, and also for adults, with the ‘street climbing’ journeys.

Besides, the 5th of July the Asturias Sport Climbing Championship 2014 will take place in front of the Town Hall of Gijón, with the help of the Mountain and Climbing Sports Federation and the Sports Department of Gijón’s Town Council. The competition will be opened for all climbers – federated or not – who wish to compete or initiate themselves at climbing activities.

The closing date for this climbing summer in Gijón will be the IFSC Sports Climbing Championships 2014, that will take place between the 8 and the 14 of September and will have the disciplines of speed, lead and paraclimbing at the Palacio de Deportes, with an estimated participation of more than 800 athletes of 65 countries.
